Christian Experience - Repenting
- Christian Experience - Repenting
- This semester and over the coming weeks we are going open up to the word of God in the Bible to consider and investigate our Christian experience. Even though all Christian's have a unique personal experience of Christ, we all share the following experiences as we "follow the Lamb" and "run the race" of the Christian life. The experience of (1) repenting is literally a "change of mind" and leads an unbelieving sinner to a change his/her mind about needing the grace of our Savior, Jesus Christ. Other experiences we will cover are as follows: (2) believing into Christ, (3) calling on/confessing the name of the Lord, (4) baptism, (5) feeding on the word, (6) prayer, (7) confession of sins, (8) enjoying grace, and the last-and a major experience of each Christian is (9) walking in love.
- Repentance is a term that is tending to be mentioned less and less in today's practice of Christianity. This is primarily because of the consideration that the kingdom of the heavens is a matter in the future and that (1)"the grace of Christ" that comes to man by the coming of the Lord Jesus Christ (John 1:17) has replaced the old covenant of the law and that (2) the work of the Lord Jesus in shedding His blood on the cross and dying for our sins is all that we need for our eternal salvation. To these facts we wholeheartedly agree and would even shout a thousand "hallelujahs"! But please, remember that we still have our Christian experience while we are dwelling upon this earth! Here we are not yet fully transformed, we still have the sinful flesh, and we are still prone to weakness and failure. How we praise the Lord, has given us a way to deal with our daily sins and be freed from the condemnation of our own heart (conscience) and from the attack of God's enemy, who is only too happy to accuse us before man, God, and our own conscience. Thank the Lord that we may confess and repent daily, hourly or moment-by-moment and be preserved in the Divine fellowship with the Father and with His Son, Jesus Christ. Such fellowship is the experience of the Divine Life (1 John 1:3, footnotes 33 and 34).
- Verses and footnotes from the Recovery Version of the New Testament
- Matthew 3:21-2 - And saying, Repent, for the kingdom of the heavens has drawn near.
- Matthew 3:32 - For this is He who was spoken of through Isaiah the prophet, saying, "A voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare the way of the Lord; make straight His paths."
- Mark 1:152 - And saying, The time is fulfilled and the kingdom of God has drawn near. Repent and believe in the gospel.
- 1 Thessalonians 1:92 - For they themselves report concerning us what kind of entrance we had toward you and how you turned to God from the idols to serve a living and true God
- Questions
- What parts of our inner being are involved with repenting?
- When John the Baptist and the Lord Jesus declared boldly for all people to repent, there were some how did not. Why not? How did He warn them?
- What is hindered in our Christian experience if we do not repent in our attitude toward the world? What happens when the world is brought into the church and why does the Lord use such a strong word as "hate" to oppose it?
