Christian Experience – Calling on/Confessing the Name of the Lord (Part 1 of 2)

  1. An Introduction to Christian Experience
    1. This week and for the next few weeks we are going to repeat paragraph one of this introduction so that we all may memorize all of the common Christian experiences in a Christian's life. Even though all Christians have a unique experience of Christ, we all share the following experiences as we "follow the Lamb" and "run the race" of the Christian life: (1) repenting, (2) believing into Christ. (3) calling on/confessing the name of the Lord. (4) baptism. (5) feeding on the word. (6) prayer. (7) confession of sins. (8) enjoying grace, and the last-and a major experience of each Christian- is (9) walking in love. After covering "repenting" last week, we now move on to "believing into Christ."
    2. Calling on or confessing the name of the Lord is one of richest experiences a Christian may have when they initially call on the name of the Lord to receive Him into their being, daily pray and open to Lord for refreshing and revival, and moment by moment to experience the victory of Christ in a practical way over our fleshly lusts, love of the world, and the weakness toward God that seems to creep into our experience as we walk the dusty pathway of a normal day in the human life. How we praise the Lord that a promise was given in the small book of Joel chapter 2 that said that the Spirit was to be poured out on "all flesh." The simple statement is, "and it shall be that everyone who calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved." Eventually the practice became so common among believers that Saul, who eventually became the apostle Paul, received authority from the Jewish chief priests to in Ananias' words "bind all who call upon your name."
    3. The value of calling upon the name of the Lord as an outward practice cannot be overestimated! Eventually after Saul had lost his sight on the road to Damascus and after Ananias had visited him to tell him why and for what purpose that the Lord Jesus had called him, Paul was baptized calling on the name of the Lord. What a cleansing that Paul received from all his past! He now had the experience to write Romans chapter 10 and declare boldly, "for there is no distinction between Jew and Greek, for the same Lord is Lord of all and rich to all who call upon Him."
  2. Verses and footnotes from the Recovery Version of the New Testament
    1. Acts 2:211-3 - And it shall be that everyone who calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.
    2. Acts 9:141 -And here he has authority from the chief priests to bind all who call upon Your name.
    3. Romans 10:8-10, Footnotes 81, 91-2, and 101 – 8 But what does it say? ``The word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart,'' that is, the word of the faith which we proclaim, 9 That if you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved; 10 For with the heart there is believing unto righteousness, and with the mouth there is confession unto salvation.
  3. Questions
    1. What are the different reasons that we call on the Lord and why is the Lord able to meet the need no matter what our particular need that we are expressing?
    2. What is the meaning of the name of Enosh, who was the first man to call upon the name of the Lord in the Bible?
