Christian Experience - Calling on/Confessing the Name of the Lord (Part 2 of 2)

  1. An Introduction to Christian Experience
    1. This week and for the next few weeks we are going to repeat paragraph one of this introduction so that we all may memorize all of the common Christian experiences in a Christian's life. Even though all Christians have a unique experience of Christ, we all share the following experiences as we "follow the Lamb" and "run the race" of the Christian life: (1) repenting, (2) believing into Christ. (3) calling on/confessing the name of the Lord. (4) baptism. (5) feeding on the word. (6) prayer. (7) confession of sins. (8) enjoying grace, and the last-and a major experience of each Christian- is (9) walking in love. After covering "repenting" last week, we now move on to "believing into Christ."
    2. Last week we saw that calling on or confessing the name of the Lord is one of richest experiences a Christian may have. Initially we call on the name of the Lord to receive Him into our being. Daily we call to pray and open to Lord for refreshing and revival. Finally, moment by moment we call and confess His name to experience the victory of Christ in a practical way over our fleshly lusts, love of the world, and the weakness toward God that seems to creep into our experience as we walk the dusty pathway of each day in the human life.
    3. Calling and confessing the name of the Lord Jesus keeps us focused on the Lord, supplied with His life in our human spirit, and saves us from being distracted by matters and even favorite doctrines which will separate us from other believers and cause division.
  2. Verses and footnotes from the Recovery Version of the New Testament
    1. 1 Corinthians 1:21-2,8 - To the church of God which is in Corinth, to those who have been sanctified in Christ Jesus, the called saints, with all those who call upon the name of our Lord Jesus Christ in every place, who is theirs and ours
    2. 1 Corinthians 12:31,3 - Therefore I make known to you that no one speaking in the Spirit of God says, Jesus is accursed; and no one can say, Jesus is Lord! except in the Holy Spirit.
    3. 2 Timothy 2:221,3 - But flee youthful lusts, and pursue righteousness, faith, love, peace with those who call on the Lord out of a pure heart.
  3. Questions
    1. Why did the Jewish religion have a problem with people who were calling on the name of Jesus? See Acts 4:10, 29-31; 5:28,40; 5:17.
    2. How was Saul going to find the Christians to bind them and put them in prison when he arrived at Damascus? Acts chapter 9.
    3. What is another kind of calling described in the Bible? Romans 8:30, Matthew 4:21; 10:1; 22:3-4,8. (See footnotes on Matthew 22:14.)
