Christian Experience - Baptism (Part 1 0f 2)

  1. An Introduction to Christian Experience
    1. So far this semester we have covered three experiences of the Christian life: (1) repenting, (2) believing into Christ, and (3) calling on/confessing the name of the Lord. This week we begin the experience of baptism.
    2. Few items in the church history have caused more problems between believers than differing concepts about the matter of baptism. At some point in church history the matter of immersing believers completely in water was replaced by sprinkling and doing it when a person was so young that they could not possibly know what "baptism" means or what a true experience of baptism can mean in our daily Christian life. The first group of Christians who insisted that we should be baptized fully in the water and that it should be done when we are of an age to understand it's meaning were considered by the Christian religious ones of their day as "heretics." Many of these dear believers were killed for this belief. Eventually, through much persecution the meaning of the original language became clear and such a physical practice became accepted and respectable.
    3. The purpose of our study is not to get into the proper physical way to put people into water. Our purpose is to dig into the Word to see what the Bible says concerning this matter and what value this matter has in the experience of a believer to speed us on to living a human life that is well pleasing to God. May the Lord direct each of us to enter into this study with and open heart and open mind to consider the speaking of the Word of God in the New Testament.
  2. Verses and footnotes from the Recovery Version of the New Testament
    1. Mark 16:161-2 - He who believes and is baptized shall be saved, but he who does not believe shall be condemned.
    2. Matthew 3:61 - And they were baptized by him in the Jordan River as they confessed their sins
    3. Mark 1:81 - I have baptized you in water, but He Himself will baptize you in the Holy Spirit.
  3. Questions
    1. What Examples in the Old and New Testaments show that baptism represents a cutting off of our old life and a starting of a new life in our experience?
    2. What vehicle was used to save Noah and his relatives from the flood. What does this vehicle represent?
    3. What does the coming up and out of the water after baptism represent?
