Christian Experience - Feeding on the Word (Part 1 of 2)

  1. An Introduction to Christian Experience
    1. So far this semester we have covered four experiences of the Christian life: (1) repenting, (2) believing into Christ, (3) calling on/confessing the name of the Lord and (4) Baptism. It may seem that we are moving quite slow. The fact is that in our Christian experience our grow is slow. This is because growth in life takes time. The higher the life the longer it takes to grow. A mushroom can grow quite much overnight, however, the life of man requires about 9 months before it is ready to be on it's own. The highest life is God's life, and the lives of many Christians over the centuries have proven out that most people who exhibited the Life of God in their daily lives had spent a number of years in the growth of life. Today we cover a matter that contributes much to this process.
    2. Feeding on the Word is not a common phrase among Christians. Most Christians thing that feeding on the Word means to study the Bible and by doing so will receive additional Bible knowledge. Some consider that learning "doctrines" or to us another Word "teachings" means that a person is growing in Christ. The problem with this concept is that many Christians after learning their "particular" teaching then club other Christians over the head with their newly learned knowledge or try to impress other Christians with their new learning. This is not the feeding on the Word that we will cover in this Bible study. Here we will learn and study but we want the food that will help us grow in the Divine Life!
    3. So what are the things that we can study that will make God's life in us grow? The New Testament calls it "the apostles teaching and fellowship"; hence it is in the New Testament teaching. Mainly, they are teachings that state and explain the matters of "the faith" which all true Christians believe, experience, enjoy, and have a hope in. Lord open up your Word to us today! Amen!
  2. Verses and footnotes from the Recovery Version of the New Testament
    1. Matthew 4:43-5 - He answered and said, It is written, "Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every Word that proceeds out through the mouth of God."
    2. Hebrews 5:123, 131 - 12 For when because of the time you ought to be teachers, you have need again for someone to teach you what the rudiments of the beginning of the oracles of God are and have become those who have need of milk and not of solid food. 13 For everyone who partakes of milk is inexperienced in the Word of righteousness, for he is an infant
    3. 1 Corinthians 3:21,2 - I gave you milk to drink, not solid food, for you were not yet able to receive it. But neither yet now are you able
    4. 1 Peter 2:21-5, 2:31 - As newborn babes, long for the guileless milk of the Word in order that by it you may grow unto salvation, 3 If you have tasted that the Lord is good.
  3. Questions
    1. Can you think of any examples in the Old Testament where the Word of God was compared to food?
    2. Why is it logical that a man who is created in God's image would be required to eat or take into his being something other that physical food?
    3. Are there any indications in the last chapter of the Bible that we are meant to be eating for eternity?
