Revelation Study

The Throne, The Worthy Lion-Lamb, and the Scroll with its Contents

  1. Introduction
    1. Earlier this semester at the very beginning of our study on the book of Revelation we saw the importance and preeminence of Christ in the heavens in His ascension. First, Christ was recognized by an angel as a lion that would deal with God's enemy, the angel Lucifer or as we know him, Satan. (Rev. 5:5) Second, Christ was recognized by a man (by the apostle John) as a lamb as having just been slain, because we recognize Christ as our savior and redeemer. (Revelation 5:6)
    2. Just before these two events, in chapter 4 and the beginning of Chapter 5, John was shown an open door in heaven and the scene is important. He was asked by an angel to come up, and it was declared to him that "I will show you the things that must take place after these things." These things are what he was about to be shown. He was shown the throne and the one sitting on the throne along with a wonderful description. Next, John was shown the twenty-four thrones around the throne upon which were angels. The description continues mentioning lightning's, voices, thunders, seven lamps of fire (which are the seven spirits), a glassy sea like crystal, four living creatures representing the creation which God had brought into being, and when these creatures take the lead to worship God the angels follow. This brings us to chapter five.
    3. Chapter five begins by describing the right hand of the one sitting on the throne. In it is a scroll. John wept because no one was found worthy to open the scroll. He was then instructed to behold the lion of the tribe of Judah (a man) and when he looked he saw a lamb as having just been slain. This was Christ, resurrected and ascended. The description is awesome as heaven erupts with praises and prayers in recognition that the Lamb of God is worthy to not only to take the scroll but to loose it's seals. Chapters 6-11 are a record of this happening.
  2. The Lamb takes the scroll and opens all seven seals(Rev. 6:1), and each of the 4 living creatures say "Come."
    1. First Seal - the Gospel "Come" Revelation 6:1-4
