The Mystery of Christ in His Process and Work - Incarnation
- Introduction
- The first three Bible study times this semester we looked at the "Person of Christ" as we investigated the wonderful mystery of this man named "Jesus". From the very beginning God the Father is seen in operation. The process began with many prophecies in the Old Testament of the Bible. Then angels appeared to both Joseph and Mary. This angel of Jehovah told them to name this baby "Jesus" which means "Jehovah the Savior" or "the salvation of Jehovah" (Luke 2:21).
- This week we will see the process of how God became a man. It is called incarnation. This has nothing to do with reincarnation, which is a devilish teaching of Buddhism. Isaiah 9:6 is perhaps the most wonderful prophecy concerning Christ. It says, "For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given; and the government shall be upon His shoulder: and His name shall be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace" (ASV).
- Crucial verses and footnotes in the New Testament Recovery Version Bible.
- Luke 1:352 - And the angel answered and said to her, The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore also the holy thing which is born will be called the Son of God.
- Matthew 1:181 - Now the origin of Jesus Christ was in this way: His mother, Mary, after she had been engaged to Joseph, before they came together, was found to be with child of the Holy Spirit.
- Matthew 1:201 - But while he pondered these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary your wife, for that which has been begotten in her is of the Holy Spirit.
- Romans 8:33 - For that which the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God, sending His own Son in the likeness of the flesh of sin and concerning sin, condemned sin in the flesh
- John 1:141,2 (¶ 1-2) - And the Word became flesh and tabernacled among us (and we beheld His glory, glory as of the only Begotten from the Father), full of grace and reality.
- Questions
- Webster's dictionary (1828) defines a process as, "a proceeding or moving forward; progressive course; tendency; as the process of man's desire". How does "incarnation" satisfy this definition?
- Was Jesus born of Mary or of the Holy Spirit?
- Why did God need to send His Son and why in particular did He have to be a man?
