The Riches of God's Salvation - Forgiveness

  1. A Quick Review
    1. In previous weeks we have seen that God in His eternal purpose determined definite goals for the people whom He desired for a possession and who believed God and as a result have believed "into" his Son (John 3:16). Thus God accomplished a salvation for us that displays His riches toward us in Christ Jesus. We are now covering 14 aspects of the riches of this salvation. Thus far we have seen two aspects that were determined by God: (1) God's selection, (2) the predestination. Next we saw: (3) redemption, (4) propitiation, and (5) the blood of Christ.
    2. This week we will see God's forgiveness. God is falsely accused today by Satan and by nonbelievers of being a God who condemns men. Also it is falsely said that God will condemn men to hell if man does not do good instead of evil. Such false concepts prove that there is a real lack of the understanding of God's salvation in Jesus Christ and the loving heart of God our Savior. We have a conscience that both recognizes and condemns sin. Guilt and condemnation is the result, as we are all sinners. Forgiveness is a great blessing, releasing us from condemnation that can freeze up our willingness to draw near to God and cause us to use elaborate schemes to hide our sin and hide from God. Adam and Eve experienced this in the very beginning. We too will experience this if we do not experience God's forgiveness.
  2. Forgiveness
    - Read the verses below along with the footnotes indicated.
    1. Acts 2:38 - And Peter said to them, Repent and each one of you be baptized upon the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. Footnote 385
    2. Ephesians 1:7 - In whom we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of offenses, according to the riches of His grace Footnote 72
    3. Hebrews 9:22 - And almost all things are purified by blood according to the law, and without shedding of blood there is no forgiveness. Footnote 221
    4. 1 John 2:12 - I write to you, little children, because your sins have been forgiven you because of His name. Footnote 122
    5. 1 John 1:9 - If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. Footnotes 92 and 93
  3. Discussion questions
    1. What are some things that we do daily that need to be confessed to maintain the fellowship with God?
    2. Is there a sin that is not able to be forgiven? Are the number of sins laid upon Jesus Christ on the cross incomplete?
    3. If being forgiven is a blessing of God's redemption, would it not be logical that God has a heart that is willing to forgive? Should we not have the same heart of love toward one another?
