The Riches of God's Salvation - Justification
- A Quick Review
- In previous weeks we have seen that God in His eternal purpose determined definite goals for the people He desired for a possession and who believed God and, as a result, have believed "into" his Son (John 3:16). God accomplished a salvation for us that displays His riches toward us in Christ Jesus. We are now covering 14 aspects of the riches of this salvation. Thus far we have seen two aspects that were determined by God: (1) God's selection, (2) the predestination. Next we saw: (3) redemption, (4) propitiation, and (5) the blood of Christ. Last time, we saw God's forgiveness and the complete commitment of the Father to invest everything in His Son that we may be secure in His forgiveness when we acknowledge our need and believe in His work.
- Justification is one of the most famous items of God's salvation, and is huge in the context of the history of the church in the last 2000-plus years. As we will see, it has both an objective (a concrete factual basis) and subjective (an inner reality that we can experience) aspect.
- The Objective Aspect of Justification - Factual and accomplished by Christ.
- Acts 13:39 - And from all the things from which you were not able to be justified by the law of Moses, in this One everyone who believes is justified. Footnote 392
- Romans 3:24 - Being justified freely by His grace through the redemption which is in Christ Jesus; Footnotes 241 and 242
- Romans 3:26 - With a view to the demonstrating of His righteousness in the present time, so that He might be righteous and the One who justifies him who is of the faith of Jesus. Footnote 261
- Romans 5:18 - So then as it was through one offense unto condemnation to all men, so also it was through one righteous act unto justification of life to all men. Footnotes 181 and 182
- Romans 8:30 - And those whom He predestinated, these He also called; and those whom He called, these He also justified; and those whom He justified, these He also glorified. Footnote 301
- The Subjective Aspect of Justification - Applicable and experiential in our lives.
- Romans 4:1 - What then shall we say that Abraham our forefather according to the flesh has found? PLEASE READ FOOTNOTE 11
- Romans 4:25 - Who was delivered for our offenses and was raised for our justification. Footnote 251
- Romans 5:18 - So then as it was through one offense unto condemnation to all men, so also it was through one righteous act unto justification of life to all men. Footnote 182
- 1 Corinthians 6:11 - And these things were some of you; but you were washed, but you were sanctified, but you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and in the Spirit of our God. Footnote 111
- Questions for discussion
- What other English words are related to "justification" and how are they related?
- How is what is spoken of in Ephesians 1:5 related to justification?
- In John 10 the Lord Jesus said, "I have come that they may have life, and may have it abundantly". Is the matter of justification implied and, if so, how? Hint: See Romans 5:18 footnote 181 in the New Testament Recovery Version.
