The Riches of God’s Salvation – Reconciliation

  1. A Quick Review
    1. How wonderful it has been this semester to review some of the awesome blessings we have received in coming to know God through the Lord Jesus Christ. These riches are fully revealed in the Bible, God's love letter to man. Thus God accomplished a salvation for us that displays His riches toward us in Christ Jesus. We are now covering 14 items of the riches of this salvation. First, we have seen two items that were that were determined by God in eternity past: (1) God's selection, and (2) predestination. Next we saw (3) redemption, (4) propitiation, (5) the blood of Christ. After this, we saw (6) God's forgiveness and the complete commitment of the Father to invest everything in His Son that we may be secure in His forgiveness when we acknowledge our need and believe in His work.
    2. Last week we saw justification in both its objective and subjective aspects. Being justified is the result of our believing and is practically enjoyed when we receive the grace of God as our life supply. This wonderful justification makes us right with God objectively and with God and man when we experience it subjectively in a daily way.
  2. Reconciliation
    1. The definition - To make friendly again or to win over to a friendly attitude; to settle a quarrel; to make compatible; to bring into harmony; to make content.
    2. Romans 5:10 - For if we, being enemies, were reconciled to God through the death of His Son, much more we will be saved in His life, having been reconciled - Footnote 101
    3. Ephesians 2:16 - And might reconcile both in one Body to God through the cross, having slain the enmity by it. - Footnote 161
    4. Ephesians 2:18 - For through Him we both have access in one Spirit unto the Father. - Footnotes 183 and 184
    5. Colossians 1:20 - And through Him to reconcile all things to Himself, having made peace through the blood of His cross--through Him, whether the things on the earth or the things in the heavens. - Footnotes 201 through 205
    6. 2 Corinthians 5:20 - On behalf of Christ then we are ambassadors, as God entreats you through us; we beseech you on behalf of Christ, Be reconciled to God. - Footnote 202
  3. Questions for discussion
    1. What is the significance of the term "Father" and how does it differ from the term used by even many unbelievers today - "God"?
    2. How is it that not only we have been reconciled to God but even the creatures of the creation were reconciled by Christ? When does this reconciliation to God get fully applied to the creation?
    3. What is the difference between the reconciliation mentioned in 2 Corinthians 5:19 and the one mentioned in 2 Corinthians 5:20?
