The Riches of God's Salvation - Regeneration, Part 4 (Regeneration in 1 John)

  1. A Quick Review
    1. This spring semester we will complete all the wonderful and rich items of God's salvation. If you wish to review what we covered in the fall of 2005 or the new weekly studies in 2006 you can visit our website at www.life-bible-study.org and go to the outlines section. The last two weeks we began the matter of regeneration. We saw how strong the Lord Jesus spoke concerning our need to be born again and that this was a spiritual birth. All of this took place in the first six verses of the Gospel of John, chapter 6. Our regeneration initiates a process to begin forming and producing the bride of Christ. Thus, our receiving of the divine life produces an "organic union" with the Lord in our spirit makes us part of the church, the eternal purpose of God in this age and will result in the marriage of the Son (described as the marriage of the Lamb) with the bride to begin the next age.
    2. Last week we reviewed our regeneration by looking at verses in 1 Peter, chapter one. It is amazing that we as individual believers experience our "new birth" or regeneration in a specific moment of time, however 1 Peter 1:3 reveals that our regeneration was actually accomplished through the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Some people think that the birth of triplets is an amazing thing. How about the regeneration of billions of Christians at the resurrection of Jesus Christ? Also, we saw that this regeneration comes to us through the word in two aspects revealed by the meaning of two different Greek words. The first Greek word is logos which means the constant or written word such as the words on this page. This Greek word is used in 1 Peter 1: 23 and 1:24. When this logos is spoken and comes to us by "hearing" it becomes the rhema word. This Greek word is used in the New Testament many times and this "hearing" is the element that produces faith in our being and by which we become born again. Do you remember Peter's words in John 6:68? "Simon Peter answered Him, Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. See footnote in John 6:63, footnote 3.
  2. Regeneration in 1 John
    1. 1 John 3:9 - Everyone who has been begotten of God does not practice sin, because His seed abides in him; and he cannot sin, because he has been begotten of God. Footnote 93
    2. 1 John 4:7 - Beloved, let us love one another, because love is of God, and everyone who loves has been begotten of God and knows God. Footnotes 74 and 75
    3. 1 John 5:1 - Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ has been begotten of God, and everyone who loves Him who has begotten loves him also who has been begotten of Him. Footnote 11
    4. 1 John 5:4 - For everything that has been begotten of God overcomes the world; and this is the victory which has overcome the world--our faith. Footnotes 41-3 and 45
    5. 1 John 5:19 - We know that we are of God, and the whole world lies in the evil one. Footnote 191
  3. Questions for discussion
    1. Why do some people hate Christians?
    2. Do Christians sin after they are born again?
    3. Some Christians believe you can lose your salvation. Can you lose your regeneration?
    4. What did the Gnostics and the Cerinthians believe and why did it prove that they were not children of God?
