Sanctification

  1. A Quick Review
    1. After skipping last weeks' Bible study because of a teacher's conference and after the final week on the matter of regeneration or being "born again," we are now ready to proceed to the next matter in the 14 aspects of God's salvation. Let us repeat again that these 14 items that we are covering do not happen one after another in time. For example, we presented the matter of forgiveness and reconciliation well before the matter of regeneration. Our experience of these matters do have a beginning, but we have to be clear that daily confession of ours sins can give us a fresh experience of both of these matters. In this Bible study we attempt to present each of these matters as direct as we can from God's word.
    2. May the Lord be with us as we open up to Him and to His Holy Scriptures.
  2. Sanctification
    1. General view: 2 Thessalonians 2:13, footnote 3
But we ought to thank God always concerning you, brothers beloved of the Lord, because God chose you from the beginning unto salvation in sanctification of the Spirit and belief of the truth
    2. Before believing - 1 Peter 1:25
Chosen according to the foreknowledge of God the Father in the sanctification of the Spirit unto obedience and the sprinkling of the blood of Jesus Christ: Grace to you and peace be multiplied.
    3. At the time we were saved - Hebrews 13:12; 1 Corinthians 6:11
Therefore also Jesus, that He might sanctify the people through His own blood, suffered outside the gate. Footnote 121
And these things were some of you; but you were washed, but you were sanctified, but you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and in the Spirit of our God. Footnote 111
    4. After believing
      1. Romans 6:19, 22
I speak in human terms because of the weakness of your flesh. For just as you presented your members as slaves to uncleanness and lawlessness unto lawlessness, so now present your members as slaves to righteousness unto sanctification. Footnotes 191-2
But now, having been freed from sin and enslaved to God, you have your fruit unto sanctification, and the end, eternal life. Footnote 222
      2. 1 Thessalonians 5:23
And the God of peace Himself sanctify you wholly, and may your spirit and soul and body be preserved complete, without blame, at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. Footnotes 231-4
      3. Hebrews 2:11 For both He who sanctifies and those who are being sanctified are all of One, for which cause He is not ashamed to call them brothers, Footnotes 111-2
      4. Ephesians 5:26
That He might sanctify her, cleansing her by the washing of the water in the word, Footnote 261
      5. John 17:17
Sanctify them in the truth; Your word is truth. Footnotes 171-2
  3. Questions for discussion
    1. How does the matter of sanctification show that God desires to do a complete job of redeeming man to Himself?
    2. How does the fall of man (or, as the book of Romans says in 5:19 "the disobedience of one man") relate to man's need to be sanctified?
    3. Is sanctification the same thing as holiness? What is holiness?
    4. Does the Old Testament mention the Holy Spirit?
