The Riches of God's Salvation - Transformation
- A Quick Review
- Including last week we have now covered ten items in God's rich salvation. It might be good to point out at this time the operation of the triune God in this process. We realize that using this term, "triune God" sometimes can bother certain Christians because this term is not found in the Bible as a definite word in the original language in which the New Testament was written. Triune simply means three - one. In church history there have been people who have centered their New Testament teaching on God being one, while others have definitely emphasized the three (the Father, The Son Jesus Christ, and the Holy Spirit). We are not going to try in this Bible study to explain this matter, since to do so one would have to understand one of the greatest mysteries in the New Testament. (If you would like to get into this amtter further just read and study the footnote on 2 Corinthians 13:14 in the Recovery Version New Testament; and by the way, it may take you a little time because the footnote is two and a half pages long!). We will, however, state the fact of God being three-one is well founded in the holy Bible. We will just say with praise that this fact is WONDERFUL!
- According to the Bible it was the Father who purposed, and is the source of salvation. The Son Jesus Christ, came to accomplish what the Father planned, and it is the Spirit who in his "actions" is moving and applying what Christ has accomplished to God's redeemed people.
- We will mention one more time this week that the 14 riches of God's salvation are not steps in linear order that we experience like reading a list of ingredients for a cooking recipe. As any good cook will tell you, you cannot just add all the ingredients at once to a large bowl, mix them up, and put them in the oven! In the same way, we both experience and come to the full knowledge of all these wonderful items by opening our being to our wonderful Jesus and His operation day by day in prayer and in reading His word. (1 Corinthians 12:11, Philippians 2:13)
- This week we specifically touch the matter of transformation. Both Romans and 2 Corinthians use a particular Greek word for transformation. As we will see there are definite things that have to happen for us to be transformed and that the groundwork for such change is both available and possible.
- Transformation
- Romans 12:2 - And do not be fashioned according to this age, but be transformed by the renewing of the mind that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and well pleasing and perfect. Footnote 23-4
- 2 Corinthians 3:18 - But we all with unveiled face, beholding and reflecting like a mirror the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory, even as from the Lord Spirit. Footnotes 181,3-10
- Revelation 2:17 - He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. To him who overcomes, to him I will give of the hidden manna, and to him I will give a white stone, and upon the stone a new name written, which no one knows except he who receives it. Footnotes 173-4
- Question for discussion
- Does this transformation happen within us or outside of us?
