Eternal Life - Jesus came to give it...but what is it?
- The eternal life being available every day
- In beginning this Bible study last fall in 2005, we presented the three different kinds of "life" in the Bible. In those meetings we saw the awesome arrangement of God to put the New Testament in the Greek language. The Greeks were very expressive in their language and it allowed both the original apostles and the apostle Paul to put into human language "the words that shall by no means pass away" (Matt. 24:35, Mark 13:31, Luke 21:33). We will not explain in this outline the Greek language differences as we did last fall between the physical life, soul-life, and eternal life. Suffice it to say that that the "life" that Jesus brought to the earth was "eternal" and that before this time man died without ever being able to hear the words that communicated this Life. We will see in the next six weeks what this eternal life is and how it is revealed.
- The wonderful 14 items of God's salvation we have just studied show us that God has a very specific plan in His salvation. It includes our redemption from the fallen race of Adam, being conformed to the firstborn Son of God, and as we saw last week, the transfiguration of our bodies into the glory of this firstborn Son. This eternal life is central to the accomplishment of this salvation.
- Jesus mentioned a wonderful fact in the book of John. If we are open and hear the words spoken by the Son, we are actually hearing the words of God. Please read John 8:45-47. Next read the footnote on "words of God" which is in John 6:63, footnote 3. Many of Jesus' disciples after taking his words in John chapter 6 as "logos", began to leave Him because the word was to "hard" for them to hear. When asking Peter and the eleven disciples whether they would leave Him as well, Peter said simply, "Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life."

- Questions for discussion
- Can you quote a verse in John chapter 6 that relates spirit and life with the word? Please read the first footnote to us all.
- From the verses above could you share something about how the eternal life is a central matter in the New Testament and in our salvation?
- Which of the verses above show that the "eternal life" may not come to us if we are just passive in our daily life?
