Eternal Life - Different from the physical life and soul life

  1. Introduction
    1. The physical (created) life is defined in the Greek language by the word "bios", where we get our word today for "biology". See Luke 8:14 below.
    2. Luke 8:14 - And that which fell into the thorns, these are those who heard and, going away, are utterly choked by anxieties and riches and pleasures of this life, and do not bring any fruit to maturity.
    3. The second life, the soul life (created by God's breath in Genesis chapter 2 in the Old Testament of the Bible), in Greek is "psuche". Psuche is where we get our present day word psychology. See Matt. 16:25-26 and John 12:25 below.
  2. Study Verses
    1. Romans 5:17 - For if by the offense of the one death reigned through the one, much more those who receive the abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness will reign in life through the One, Jesus Christ. Footnote 174
    2. John 10:11 - I am the good Shepherd; the good Shepherd lays down His life for the sheep. Footnote 111
    3. John 10:27-30 - My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me; And I give to them eternal life, and they shall by no means perish forever, and no one shall snatch them out of My hand. My Father, who has given them to Me, is greater than all, and no one can snatch them out of My Father's hand. I and the Father are one.
    Questions for Discussion
    1. Two verses above speak of Christ Jesus as a shepherd. Can you find a verse in the book of Luke in which the Lord describes a shepherd leaving the 99 and looking for a lost sheep? Hint: You can use the outline at the beginning of the book of Luke.
    2. How does John, chapter 10 verse 10 and verses 26-29 show that this eternal life is for our time on the earth in our human life as well as for eternity?
    3. Where do we receive eternal life into our being?
