Eternal Life - The Life Which We Should Lay Hold On

  1. Isn't Eternal Life a possession that we already have?
    1. All right, so we have already been studying eternal life for the last 5 weeks! So why is it still necessary that we still lay hold on to eternal life? After all, in week one we found out what eternal life is; it is God Himself - everything that we are not. Next we found out just how different it is from the two lives we have been experiencing since our human birth - the physical and the soul life. Next, we examined the tree of Life and how preeminent it is in the Bible. This means the eternal life is so preeminent in the Bible. Then, how the wonderful person of Jesus Christ is eternal life. We enjoyed how indestructible and incorruptible it is! Nothing lasts like the eternal life. It is a life with a destiny. This means that it makes us a people with a special destiny.
    2. ...BUT...this eternal life has to be laid hold of. Even though our regeneration is secure, the New Testament apostles spoke frequently that we must "run the race", "exercise ourselves unto godliness", "set your mind on things above", and, of course, "fight the good fight of the faith" to "lay hold on eternal life".
    3. Thus, there is the need of prayer for strengthening and pursuit of the eternal life daily. May the Lord give each of us at least one companion with which to run this race! Such a corporate exercise will help each of us to complete the race and obtain our eternal destiny.
  2. Laying Hold of Eternal Life
    1. 1 Timothy 6:122 - Fight the good fight of the faith; lay hold on the eternal life, to which you were called and have confessed the good confession before many witnesses. Footnote 122
  3. Questions for Discussion
    1. Share an experience when you realized that you could no longer go on coasting along in the Christian life.
    2. How do we know that the Apostle Paul was so concerned about us laying hold of eternal life?
    3. How many days a year do we need to be concerned about eternal life? When do you sense the reality of the eternal life?
