The Riches of God's Salvation - Redemption
- A Quick Review
- Three weeks ago we saw God has accomplished a marvelous rescue of fallen man. In the last two weeks we have seen (1) God's selection and (2) predestination which, although happening in eternity past, will affect us both in our human life and, of course, in the eternal life we share with our Lord for eternity. To have any understanding of these two items, we must consider them from God's perspective in recognition that He not only has an eternal purpose (Ephesians 1:9-10), but is very active in its fulfillment.
- Whatever understanding we receive comes to us from God Himself in our human spirit. The apostle Paul explains this in 1 Corinthians 2:11-13, "For who among men knows the things of man, except the spirit of man which is in him? In the same way, the things of God also no one has known except the Spirit of God. 12 But we have received not the spirit of the world but the Spirit which is from God, that we may know the things which have been graciously given to us by God; 13 Which things also we speak, not in words taught by human wisdom but in words taught by the Spirit, interpreting spiritual things with spiritual words."
- Eventually, we have to admit that we can never comprehend fully these first two aspects of God's complete salvation, but praise Him that He revealed them to the His apostles in Spirit. They then wrote down the revelation they received in their mingled spirit and it has come to us as the New Testament. We must praise the Lord for such love toward us!
- This week we begin the third item of God's salvation - redemption. Almost every Christian has heard this term, but as we shall see, as we gain an understanding of redemption, our faith and appreciation of our precious Lord Jesus will increase and abound. This will cause us to praise Him each time we remember His redemption.
- The Definition of Redemption
- To redeem, according to Webster's dictionary means to "buy back" or "to recover, as by paying a fee."
- Man was originally the possession of the righteous God. Man was not rebellious or disobedient. Thus the righteous God could freely fellowship with him. After the fall, man became one with God's enemy, Satan. Sin now indwelt man and as Romans 3:23 says, "For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God." Through our association with Satan, we could not meet the demands of God's righteousness, holiness, and glory. Thus, man was lost in unrighteousness and for God to redeem him, He would have to pay a price.

- Questions
- What is the difference between deliverance and forgiveness? (Hint: It's in one of the footnotes above.)
- What is the first time in the Bible that it mentions indirectly the shedding of blood? Was forgiveness related to this incident? (See Genesis, Chapter 3.)
- How do we deal with sins that happened in the past, in the present, and in the future? Will there be a day when we will sin no longer?
